Leech Lake Fishing Opener Predictions

With the 2026 Minnesota fishing opener set for May 9, Leech Lake is shaping up to offer a classic early season walleye bite. Following a steady winter and a timely ice out in late April, water temperatures are currently climbing into the mid 40s. We expect these temps to hit that magic 50 degree mark by opener, which is prime for post-spawn activity. Because the ice off date was consistent with historical norms, many of the well known spring areas, specifically the large main lake points and expansive flats, should be highly productive right out of the gate as fish follow their predictable seasonal migrations.

For a successful opener, focus your efforts on those gravelly shorelines where walleyes have recently finished spawning before they transition toward their spring feeding grounds. While those large main lake points are always a safe bet, don't overlook the expansive sand flats in 6 to 12 feet of water. These flats hold large pods of active fish that are easily targeted by pitching jigs tipped with spottail shiners or fatheads. If the wind picks up, drifting these sandy stretches with a Lindy Rig or a slow rolled swimbait can be incredibly effective.
